New Vanguard 33: M3 & M5 Stuart Light Tank 19401945 -- The M3 and M5 light tanks represented the culmination of American tank development in the 1930s. Although by 1939 the emphasis was shifting towards medium tanks, the Stuart saw action with the British in the western desert and with the US Army in Tunisia, and continued to serve in a reconnaissance capacity when it proved inadequate for tank fighting. It enjoyed more combat success in the Pacific however, and fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleieu, Saipan and Burma.
