New Orleans, 1815 -- The war which broke out in 1812 was supposedly caused by British impressment of American seamen from American ships but it is probably truer to say that there was almost a sub-conscious desire to complete the separation begun by the War of Independence. For the British, New Orleans was an unfortunate sideshow; for the Americans, it was the one major, unequivocal land victory of the War of 1812.
